A sideshift – or sideshifter – is a mechanism on a forklift, that is used by the operator, that allows a load to be carried on the left or right. This is used when the lift truck is working in tight environments. It is also used to position loads onto racking without the need to move the forklift truck.
Sideshifts can be installed by the forklift manufacturer so the are integrated into the forklift truck. The can also be installed as an aftermarket component.
A sideshifter that is installed after the fact de-rate the truck’s lifting capacity for two reasons:
- The sideshift mechanism has its own weight and so takes up some of the fork truck’s capacity
- The sideshift also moves the load center of a lift truck out.
