Video: Cognex shows the Dataman 500 high-speed barcode reader at ProMat 2011
The smart people at Cognex shows off the Dataman 500 high-speed barcode reader at ProMat 2011 to WarehouseiQ.com.
Shown is conveyor with an overhead camera that reads barcodes printed on cartons. Capable of performing logistics scanning, this is the first area based image ID reader that can scan barcodes on boxes. This is unique as the usual way to scan barcodes is with lasers or line scan readers. The Dataman 500 is priced like a laser scanner, but performs at the level of an expensive line scan reader.
Cost savings for a warehouse and distribution managers includes lower price barcode readers that perform at a higher rate. This allows for greater throughput on a conveyor and through the distribution system.
Bar codes that cannot be read using other technology is often given to temporary labor to manage, which represents a considerable cost to warehouse operations. With the higher read rates, the high speed bar code scanner will have a payback (ROI) in months rather than years.
